SUNDAY SCHOOL UNIT VI: "Spread God's Love to Everyone"The Season of Eastertide and Pentecost

Easter is a season that continues for 50 days and culminates in the festival of Pentecost. Sometimes it can seem that we place so much emphasis on Lent that we lose sight of the more important festival season that follows it. Throughout the season of Eastertide we contrast the gospel stories of this gradual, growing awareness with the stories from Acts, where we see the disciples boldly speaking and acting in the power of the Spirit received at Pentecost. This helps us to experience Easter and Pentecost as two important parts of the same story. Pentecost is the joyous culmination of the Great 50 Days of the Easter Season. It is a festival of fire and wind and the Holy Spirit. The color for this day is a vivid red signifying the “tongues of fire” which rested on each disciple, transforming those who follow—the learners (disciples)—into those who are sent forth (apostles).

In so many churches attendance begins dropping off as warmer weather arrives after Easter Day. If this happens, our children do not know the story and significance of Pentecost, and have only the first half of the Easter story. Perhaps if Pentecost were celebrated with the same joyous and festive spirit as Easter, families could be persuaded to make the wholeness of the Easter Season a priority so that their children would experience the full benefit of the whole story. Please make Sunday morning a worship and learning experience for our children. Children miss so much when they are absent from the learning and relationships in their Sunday School classes.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH ARE AT 9AM & 10:30 AM.
Resources used in these classes are based on selected stories from the Bible using the Revised Common Lectionary scriptures. Each unit of the “Whole People of God” curriculum helps unfold the colorful stories, the lasting truths, and the renewal of hope found throughout the Bible by using concepts that children and youth will understand. The "Whole People of God" curriculum has always been concerned with how the study of scripture connects us with the justice issues of our day. Older children begin the hour in the sanctuary with their parents or grandparents, participate in the first part of worship, then they are escorted to their classrooms with their teachers after the Children’s Message. The traditional classroom model is currently being used with an emphasis on “belonging” and building community through relationships.

Nursery Care
The church nursery is open from 8:45 to 11:45 every Sunday, welcoming babies and toddlers. Our professional Nursery Coordinator, Ms. Linda has training in CPR and regularly follows safety procedures, but most important is the love shown to the children being cared for. The nursery area includes a well stocked play room adjoined by a quiet crib room, as well as a diaper changing area and a restroom. Our Nursery Coordinator is Ms. Linda Andersen; there are always two adult paid professionals there every week. Our parents love them!

Childcare is also available for choir and hand bells rehearsals, committee meetings and fellowship groups. For mid-week childcare while attending a church event or meeting, please make a reservation at least 48 hours in advance by phoning or emailing the Church Office.

Mission Scouts
EUMC's Mission Scouts are elementary school children who attend a Mission class once a month focused on doing acts of kindness for others in some small way. When weather permits (escorted by adult volunteers and with parent permission) children may work in the pea patch located east of the church while Sunday School classes are in session.

Leadership and Service  Opportunities in Children's Ministries - Could this be a new ministry for you?
Parents, Grandparents, College Students, there are plenty of Sunday School service opportunities for you. An opportunity to make a difference and a way to leave a lasting legacy to the children at EUMC. As a church, we owe the children an opportunity to participate and grow in Christ in ways more suited to their needs.

Are you looking for a place to serve? We are staffing our different children's ministries programs for 2012 and 2013. We invite you to prayerfully consider ministry with children as a spiritual practice in which you can offer your gifts of time and service in one or more of the following areas:
